Aluminium Material – The Metal
Aluminium is among the world’s most abundant elements coming in third place behind oxygen and silicon. It appears in the earth as an aluminium ore or more commonly as bauxite which is found in sizeable deposits in Australia, Brazil, Guinea and Jamaica.
The majority of the bauxite mined, approximately 85%, is used in the production of aluminium metal which is employed in a wide cross-section of industries. These industries include transport, packaging, electrical, consumer goods, machinery and equipment and building and construction. It should not be surprising to discover that the building and construction industry consumes approximately 20% of aluminium metal produced in the world.
Special Characteristics of Aluminium
The demand in the building industry for aluminium has primarily to do with the metal being virtually maintenance free because of its corrosion resistance; and further because of its strength to weight ratio and its light weight it is used in cladding, windows, skylights, gutters, door frames, and roofing. Insulated aluminium cladding is also very thermally efficient, keeping homes warm in winter, and cool in summer. Aluminium is versatile, durable and can be painted to achieve almost any appearance required on a building.
Aluminium is used in the manufacture of replacement windows, sash windows, pivot windows, tilt and turn windows, entrance doors, French doors, bi-fold doors, patio doors, conservatories and orangeries.
Aluminium sections are available with cladding or with other forms of thermal barriers for the fabrication of thermally efficient windows and doors. Aluminium windows and doors enable homeowners to choose from different types of finishes namely, anodised, paint, foiled/laminate or clad. Any standard RAL colour paint finish, a choice of coloured laminate finishes and dual colour options i.e. a choice of one colour internally and a different colour externally are also available.
The key features of aluminium that make it an ideal metal for use in so many different industries include corrosion resistance, low density, ductility, electrical conductivity and strength in alloys.
